New game theme
« on: February 21, 2012, 08:48:32 pm »
It would be kool if Mag held an Soviet-Afghan war game. Tho to keep the game realistic and true to the war I recommend a few rules. I suggest that we start the game with the begining of the war timeline so we could start it with a base defender scenrio. All players on the soviet side must use some type of Russain small arm. The opposite goes for the rebel side, you can use any other type of gun except for russian firearms. This is cause most of the Mujahideen used foreign weapons systems until the later years. Lastly this game should be scheduled in the summertime and here are the team colors.

Mujahideen:
black, brown, white and civilian

Soviet army:
Tan & green camo (only soviet patterns)

Either go balls-out milsim or loosen our restrictions there, cowboy. You're really restricting the field for the soviets.

Yeah I agree, because there is not alot of Russian Impressioninst here on the forums. We all know that Dash is an amazing one, and I know that Trollie does impressions also. Thats all who I can think of.

It's unlikely that anything like this would happen locally.  Your best bet is to try to go to something like Eastwind.  Soviet equipment is a bit of a niche that's hard to fill with "substitutes".  It's difficult enough getting people to try to come up with a somewhat accurate loadout for themed events like BOTW (which can easily be done for under $100).  There's just not enough interest for these kinds of "strict" events and Soviet gear is a bit hard to come by for those who are only partially interested.

THe problem with this, is that if you mention the Soviet campaign in Afghanistan, half of the inquiries would be along the lines of, "The Soviets are in Afghanistan with us? I thought they stopped being the Soviet Union when we beat them in the Cold War."

Legit Russian equipment is tough to find, especially when you're looking to find a particular period outfit. It's also very expensive.
Limiting guns is also often a bad move, as for some reason, even when people will on occasion go out and spend $600 on a new loadout for a game, they can't be assed to shell out $180 for a cheapo clone and some mags.

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

Ok tanx for the thoughts but to simplify it we could just go by the colors; green vs civilian. Tho when it comes to findin' soviet-afghan war time militaria it's not that hard to fine since it wasn't that long ago. I know at least three soviet repo sites where they have a good enough selection of gear that can be used for this game. Of course the games rules I explained would more be for us more hardcore Russian fanz.

Yez D-man some of the kids at the BOTW games are saaad little bas****s. They bustin' out they're gym clothes for a vietnam game.

This would be awesome, but not enough people have the proper equipment or funds (or just general interest) to do Soviet impressions.
If you want full on milsim you need to go to Eastwind (I'm going next year when i have my 1980s Motor Rifles kit finished).
May your BMP flood at the first river crossing. May your chutes not open over the fertile plains of Germany. May all of your Submarines be issued with screen doors.

I would most deffinitely attend those eastwind games but I really don't like travelin' out of state. Pluse I really couldn't show off much soviet militaria besides my repo afghanka stuff kuz all others are originals.

The ideas/story behind this game could always be tweaked with, write a story line and call the game "inspired"

Either that or make a very open event with the historic storyline, even games, and no historical camo restrictions

Could be a small scale game, themed off of Operation Storm-333.
The raid on the Tajbeg palace in December 1979, the Soviets had low numbers (690ish Vs. 2500) and came out victorious, a somewhat small scale operation.
And Red, this wouldn't be a game for people to go out and spend $800 on a loadout to go to, this would be for the people who HAVE ALREADY gone out and spent $800 on a loadout and want a realistic game to use it in. Only one remotely period correct event was Red Dawn(2), even then, there were countless people with MARPAT and M82 woodland, and even CADPAT.

This would be a very small milsim game <100 people.

I would love to see a Soviet-Afghan war game. But aside from me, you, Tovarish and Dash and Neoptolemus and some MIR guys, there is nobody who I can think of that would go the extra mile for an impression. Of course, we could just have 10 soviets, and everybody else is a Muj. Now that would be realistic...

Would it be period correct to simply wear a loin cloth and run around with a Soviet bullet shooting thingy (aka a gun?)

I'd be interested in an event like this.

Though it seems like I might be the odd man out among those with period-accurate loadouts. I've got almost nothing Soviet, but I've been role-playing as Afghan Mujahideen in US Army training exercises the last 5 years.

If you want to know what the eastern European airsoft scene is like, picture a very strict U.S. airsoft team and add the structured requirements of a living history group. Russian airsoft teams take the gear and training far more seriously than most western players do.
