This is a direct cut and paste from the St. Louise Airsoft Players forum.

"Gentlemen, I’m glad to announce that we have finalized plans and it is now official, SLAP will be hosting a regional airsoft event this summer to be held at our own Gateway field on July 12th & 13th! We will be inviting participants from all Midwest airsoft groups and plan on promoting this as the airsoft event of the summer in the Midwestern US region. Needless to say, you do not want to miss this one guys!

RECONDO July 12/13 2008

This event is a two-part affair. A day long training session modeled around the actual MACV Recondo course immediately followed by the main event, an overnight Vietnam themed milsim set on a firebase in the jungles of Northern Vietnam.

Not counting leadership positions (which there will be several), there are 3 general roles to choose from. NVA/VC, US line Infantryman or US Ranger (LRRP). Due to the very specific patrol/commo procedures they will be using for the game, those playing as LRRPs will be be required to attend the Recondo course portion of the event. NVA/VC & line infantrymen may show up before the game in the normal fashion.

Game Concept: This will be a contest between two heavily armed and determined forces operating in a northern province of South Vietnam, circa 1969. On one side, a hastily assembled group of Vietcong guerillas and small groups of NVA regular troops have been tasked with eliminating a contingent of US forces at a recently built fire support base in the area. On the other side, a group of motivated US infantry and associated recon elements will be doing their best to defend the base at all costs from being overrun by enemy forces known to be in the area.

Part 1: Recondo Class

The MACV Recondo class was a 20 day course in jungle patrol techniques offered to LRRP team leaders & atl’s operating in Vietnam. Course curriculum covered nearly every aspect of effective light unit patrolling & reconnaissance in the jungles of Vietnam. See below for more detail.

http://www.vietnamgear.com/Article.aspx?Art=54

Our Recondo class will be an airsofted version but will keep the original theme of the course as intact as possible.

Many topics will be covered, including: immediate action drills, commo (radio procedures, hand signals, intelligence reports, scheduled sitreps, using relays, codes), trail movement, avoiding detection, tracking, setting up & utilizing night defense positions, e&e procedures as well as a chain-of-command explanation and commonly used LRRP procedures, the mentality of a lrp and maybe even a little LRRP history if there’s time.

There will be a couple PT activities in the course of the day, nothing intense or sadistic, more along the lines of team-building activities with light-to-moderate physical exertion. Obviously anyone with medical concerns can sit these this out. Safety will be paramount and obviously high heat could change or eliminate this.

Part. 2: Siege at Firebase Thrasher

Setting: A small isolated firebase in northern South Vietnam and the surrounding enemy held terrain.

Teams:

US

Line infantryman: a sizeable force of US infantry have been airlifted in and are tasked with providing security for a recently cut firebase. Anyone playing on the US side but not attending the Recondo class will be a line infantryman (excluding a few specific/leadership roles).

Uniform: OD/Green fatigues. Line doggies will not be able to wear erdl camo or tiger stripes. Black or VN style jungle boots only.

Gear: No high speed gear, m1956/m1967 web gear preferred. However, due to similarity any ALICE gear will be acceptable.

Weapons: M16 or M14 strongly preferred, will allow M4’s but they must have: a)carry handle b)conventional round or VN style foregrip (no RIS) c) conventional “bird cage” flash hider or equivalent. Also allowed will be thompson, m3, xm177, car-15 & colt commando. No high capacity magazines allowed.

Lrp Team Member: A number of small long range patrol teams from the 75th will be on patrol outside the perimeter and will be responsible for providing intel and advance warning of any enemy troop movement in the area. Only those who attend the Recondo class will be able to play as a lrp in the game. Teams will go out at sunset and will be expected to stay in the field until they are wiped out or survive and are pulled in at sunrise the following morning. This role will be somewhat demanding and possibly even stressful, might not be for everyone.

Uniform: Tiger striped fatigues preferred but erdl will also be allowed. Black or VN style jungle boots only. Boonie hats are preferred but any headgear is permitted.

Gear: TBD, but same as infantry for a starting point.

Weapon: M16, xm177, CAR-15, Stoner, colt commando, coventional shotguns, mp40, m3. will allow M4’s but they must have: a)carry handle b)conventional round or VN style foregrip (no RIS) c) conventional “bird cage” flash hider or XM177 hider. No high capacity magazines allowed.

**Regardless of role, for US soldiers there will be several leadership positions and a chain of command concept will be followed to a certain extent.

North Vietnam

VC/NVA: A large group of North Vietnamese regulars and local Vietcong has been hastily assembled in an attempt to overrun the firebase and wipeout recon teams and eliminate or capture all GIs before the new base can be properly fortified.

Uniform: dark colored pajamas/fatigues or khaki NVA uniform

Gear: chi-com/russian gear encouraged, however just about anything not obviously modern is acceptable.

Weapons: AK, SKS, RPK/RPD, Thompson, MP40, etc.No high capacity magazines allowed.

no dues and as line doggies. And the only specification is you must have an impression when you join and your gun has to be either VN era or has to be passed by us. This is our website i believe everything is explained on there.... freewebs.com/tropicalthunder Lets try and keep this thread clear of this kind of stuff and on the topic of the event though.

O.k.  it would be cool if it was an active overnight battle.  Like teams could go on raids and patrols, and there had to be sentrys and guards.  Or maybe it's like that aready.  In the post it says "overnight Vietnam themed milsim".  I can't wait!

Awesome!!  I just need a few more things, and hopefully I'll be able to get them next weekend.  is your impression complete?  I could probably scrounge up some cheap gear, along with some stuff I have currently, and get one of my friends in, who has a Thompson.  One more thing, does it cost money?  What about food?  That would be really cool if we had to cook our own food.

Really, i dont know. Im sure it will be done so that if you come in a unit you will be kept together, and stragglers will be designated a squad and integrated into that squad. Sureshot, if you want to attend with us, let me know. Maybe IM me some time. Then we could use this event to get to know you, just make sure your not a pud you know, thats a big thing with us, as in ww2 airsoft we have learned that the internet hides alot about your personality, and have had quite a few problems with people we havent met first.
