Your sniper rifle has a 100 foot minimum engagement range, due to the extra velocity it's allowed to have (550 instead of 400). YOur spotter is there within 15 feet of your position, to perform two functions. For one, he helps determine if your target is at a safe distance, and for two, he covers you when someone gets too close for you to shoot. If he dies, your sniper rifle is down until you either find a new spotter or go back and respawn with him. I recommend carrying an AEG submachnegun or a good pistol with you as a backup for when this happens.

Note that the spotter rule effects replicas over 400 fps. If yours has not been upgraded to that yet then you do not need to worry about a spotter.

"Has not been upgraded".
Mind you, many of these things shoot around 480 from the factory. Just be careful.

No, you must maintain a spotter.  If you lose you spotter the bolt action gun is done and you are restricted to using the XCR regardless of distance.

I have a scope with a much more reliable and durable stadiametric rangefinder, but that still doesn't count.

The spotter is there not just to keep you accurate, but to keep you honest.

I think he meant so he knows what's beyond and what's under 100 feet.

I don't think many feilds would go for that, though. You're best bet is to just down grade the spring to UNDER 400 and work with BB weight, hop-up, and barrel stuff.
